Add A Clear Photo
Use a front-facing picture in even light, with your face and shoulders visible. A phone selfie works if it is taken at arm's length and not too close.
Pick The Size And Crop
Choose your country in the size list. The crop frame locks to the right shape, so you only move it until your head sits comfortably in the middle.
Set The Background
Keep the original, or replace it with white, off-white, light grey or light blue. The AI works on your device, so the picture is never uploaded.
Download Or Print
Save a single JPG at the exact pixel size, add a file size limit for online forms, or download a 4 × 6 print sheet with several copies.
Everything a passport photo needs, nothing it does not
Country sizes
India, United States, UK, Schengen, Canada, China, Australia and Japan are ready. Use Custom Size for anything else.
Background replace
Swap a messy wall for plain white, off-white, grey or blue using an AI cut-out that runs on your own device.
Print sheets
Tile copies on a 4 × 6, 5 × 7 or A4 sheet with thin cut lines, ready to print at a shop or at home.
Exact file size
Online passport portals often have a KB limit. Type it and the file is brought to that size.
Face guide
An optional overlay shows where the head and eyes usually sit, so framing is quick. It never appears in the saved file.
Private by design
Photos are processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared.

What counts as a good passport photo
Passport photos look simple, but offices reject a surprising number of them. The usual reasons are a poor background, shadows on the face, a head that is too small or too large in the frame, and a print or file that is not the right size. Most of these problems can be fixed before you press the shutter.
Aim for a recent, plain, front-facing portrait with a neutral expression, both eyes open and the mouth closed. Take off hats and tinted glasses unless a medical or religious reason applies, and keep hair away from the eyes.
Common passport photo sizes
The sizes below are the ones most often published. The pixel columns use 300 DPI, the standard for printing. Rules are updated from time to time, so check the official page of the issuing office before you submit.
| Country | Size | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| India | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| United States | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | 600 × 600 |
| United Kingdom | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| Schengen / EU | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| Canada | 50 × 70 mm | 591 × 827 |
| China | 33 × 48 mm | 390 × 567 |
| Australia | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| Japan | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
How to shoot one at home
- Face a window. Soft daylight from the front removes harsh shadows. Avoid a lamp directly above you.
- Stand against a plain wall. A light, empty wall is easiest. If it is not perfect, the background option can fix it.
- Use a tripod or ask a friend. Hold the camera at eye level. A camera held low or high changes the shape of the face.
- Step back. Shoot from about a metre or more and crop later. Close-ups distort features.
- Relax. Look straight into the lens with a calm face and level shoulders.
Choosing the right background colour
Most countries ask for a plain white or off-white background. A few prefer light grey or light blue. The wrong choice is a frequent reason for rejection, so match the instructions of the office you are applying to.
The Background option cuts you out from the picture and places you on a clean colour. For best results, use a photo where your hair and shoulders are clearly separated from the wall, and avoid wearing white against a white background, which makes the edge hard to see.
Printing a passport photo sheet
Printing one photo on a full sheet of paper is wasteful. The print sheet option places as many copies as will fit on a 4 × 6 inch, 5 × 7 inch or A4 page, with a small gap and a thin cut line around each. Download it as a JPG and take it to a photo shop, or print it at home at 100 percent scale. Do not choose fit to page, which would resize the photos and spoil the official dimensions.
Uploading a passport photo to a portal
Online applications often ask for a digital photo with a stated file size, such as 20 to 100 KB. Type the limit in the file size box and the tool compresses the image to fit without changing its pixel dimensions. Check the saved file once at full size before uploading to be sure it looks clean.
Mistakes that get passport photos rejected
- A shadow behind the head or across one side of the face.
- Heavy retouching, filters or beauty effects.
- A background that is cream, patterned or has objects in it.
- A head that is too small. Fill the frame as the guidelines describe.
- Printing at the wrong scale, so the size is no longer correct.
Is it safe to make a passport photo online?
Your face is personal data, so where it is processed matters. Here, the editing, the background change and the print sheet all run inside your own browser. The photo is not uploaded to any server. Our Privacy Policy explains this in more detail.
