PAN card photo and signature requirements at a glance
When you apply for a new PAN card, or correct the details of an existing one, the online form can ask for a recent photograph and a scan of your signature. Many people search for the NSDL values, because NSDL e-Gov, now called Protean, is one of the main service providers for PAN applications. The figures below are the ones that are commonly quoted for these uploads, and they are the starting values in this tool.
| Document | File size | Dimensions | What it should show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | Up to 50 KB | 295 × 413 px (2.5 × 3.5 cm) | Recent colour photo on a light background |
| Signature | Up to 50 KB | 531 × 236 px (4.5 × 2 cm) | Your signature in dark ink on white paper |
Service providers publish their own instructions and change them from time to time, and some state the size in pixels instead of centimetres. Please read the guidance on the page where you apply, and use the Customise section to type in exactly what it asks for.
When you will need a PAN photo and signature
You may be asked for these two images when you apply for a fresh PAN, when you request changes or corrections to the name, date of birth or address on an existing card, and when an application is made on behalf of a minor and the form requests images for the process. The tool simply follows the numbers you give it, so it works for NSDL (Protean), UTIITSL and any other PAN service that wants a JPEG photograph and signature.
If your application is completed with an Aadhaar-based e-sign instead, you may not need to upload images at all. Check which route your form uses before you begin.
How to prepare your PAN photo and signature
- Photograph. Select Photo, upload a clear recent portrait and keep your face in the middle of the crop frame.
- Check the checks. Look at the size and dimensions chips. Both should turn green.
- Download. Save the photo, then switch to the Signature tab.
- Signature. Sign inside a clean white box or on plain paper, photograph it from above and crop close to the ink.
- Keep the pair. Download the signature and use the ZIP button if you want both files in one package.
Taking a PAN photograph that is accepted
Stand facing a window so daylight lights your face evenly, with a plain light wall behind you. Look straight at the lens with a natural expression and keep your whole face visible.
- Use a recent picture. It should look like you today.
- Keep the background clean. If yours is busy, our background remover can make it plain white.
- Avoid shadows and glare. Spectacles should not reflect light across the eyes.
- Skip filters. Beauty effects and heavy retouching can lead to rejection.
Making your signature look clean and consistent
Sign with a dark pen, black or blue, on plain white paper or inside the box on a clean sheet. Photograph the paper from straight above in daylight so no shadow falls across the ink, then crop tightly, leaving only a thin margin, and keep ink clean-up switched on.
Sign exactly as you do on your bank documents and ID proofs. A signature that looks very different from the one you use elsewhere can raise questions later, so consistency matters more than style.
Common reasons PAN uploads fail
- The file is larger than the allowed KB limit.
- The photo is stretched because it was resized without cropping.
- The picture is blurry, dark or has a cluttered background.
- The signature is too faint, too small or sits in a shadow.
- The wrong file format was uploaded instead of JPEG.
- The details on the form, such as the name spelling, do not match your supporting documents.
The live checks in this tool catch the first three problems before you reach the upload page.
What else to check before you submit
Images are only one part of a PAN application. Make sure your name is spelled exactly as it appears on your proof of identity, your date of birth matches your proof of date of birth, and your mobile number and email address are ones you can use to receive OTPs and updates. Keep the acknowledgement number safe after you pay, because you will need it to track the application.
Always download the final files and open them once more at full size, so you can be sure they look sharp before you upload them.
Staying private while you prepare files
Your picture and signature are processed inside your browser, so they are never uploaded to our servers. When a file is ready you can download it, collect both files into one ZIP, or use Share to send the image with a link to this page through WhatsApp, email or any app installed on your phone.
Delete shared copies from chat apps once you have finished, because a photo and signature are personal documents.
