Complete guide

The complete guide to converting HEIC photos to JPG

Basics

What a HEIC file is

HEIC is the picture format that recent iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores the same photo as a JPG in roughly half the space, which is great for your storage and not so great when a website, an exam form or an older computer cannot open it. Its container is called HEIF, and you will see both names used for the same kind of file. The extension is usually .heic, sometimes .heif.

The problem is only compatibility. The picture itself is fine. Converting to JPG gives you a file that nearly every app, form and device understands.

Why convert

When you need a JPG instead

  • Online forms. Exam, job and government portals almost always accept JPG only, and many reject HEIC without a clear message.
  • Windows and older Android. Some computers need an extra codec before they can show HEIC photos.
  • Printing and editing. Photo labs and many editors expect JPG.
  • Sharing. Not every chat app or email service converts HEIC for the person who receives it.
Step by step

Converting your photos

  1. Add the photos. Drop them on the card or tap Choose Photos. You can select many at once.
  2. Let them finish. Each card shows Converting, then the new JPG size when it is done.
  3. Adjust quality if you like. The default of 90 is a good balance. Lower it for a smaller file.
  4. Download. Use the button on a single photo or Download All for one ZIP.
Quality

Choosing the JPG quality

JPG quality is a trade between sharpness and file size. At 90 the picture looks the same to the eye as the original and the file is usually a little larger than the HEIC. At 80 the file becomes noticeably smaller with very little visible change. Below 60 you may see blocky patches in smooth areas such as the sky.

If a form has a KB limit, convert first, then use the image resizer to reach the exact size. Resizing a JPG is much more reliable than trying to get a limit straight out of HEIC.

On the phone

Stop your iPhone from saving HEIC

If you would rather take JPG photos from the start, open Settings, choose Camera, then Formats, and pick Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay as HEIC, which is where this converter helps. Sharing a photo through some apps can also convert it automatically, but that is not guaranteed.

Privacy

Your photos stay on your device

Conversion happens inside your browser. The files are not uploaded to our servers, and we never see them. The first time you convert a HEIC file, the page may download a small decoding library from a public content network, and that download contains no information about your photos. If your browser can open HEIC itself, such as Safari, the library is not needed at all.

Troubleshooting

If a photo will not convert

  • It says it failed. Check that the file really is a HEIC or HEIF photo and not a video or a Live Photo bundle.
  • It is very large. Photos of many megapixels need memory, so try converting fewer at a time on an older phone.
  • No decoder loaded. The first conversion needs an internet connection to fetch the decoder. Check your connection and try again.
  • Dark or odd colours. Photos taken in HDR can look slightly different once saved as JPG, because JPG has a narrower range.
